Based on the concept of disclosure and participation, the City of Akita has been providing administration services. In April, 1997, the city became a core city, and celebrated 110th anniversary in 1999.

In the city council, forty-two elected councilors consider and discuss administrative and surrounding problems and do their best to reflect citizens opinions and ideas to the city administration. Annually regular meetings are held in March, June, September, and December.
