Many of unaffected folkcraft pieces are a reflection of the rich nature of Akita. The craftsmanship that has come down since the Edo era gives a delicate touch to traditional crafts. It will be sure to entertain you even just by looking.

Ikomanuri, lacquer ware
'Ikomanuri' is a new craft created by Akita City, using the old method of Ryukyu (old Okinawa) lacquerware. Red and black lacquer is applied to a simple shape.
Its design is highly esteemed even outside of Japan.

Kabazaiku, cherry berk craft
'Kaba-zaiku' is wooden work covered with the bark of wild cherry trees. The original patterns and luster of the trees are is beautiful. It has been appointed as a National Traditional Craft.

Akitayaki and Hodonoyaki, potteries
Akita pottery is noted for its unglazed surface and interesting three-dimensional sculptural shape. Hodono pottery, made with local clay, is known for having deep colors and a delicate shape.

Ginsenzaiku, silver wire craft
'Ginsen-zaiku' is a traditional craft using 0.2 mm pure silver threads twisted together by the craftsmen's fingers and simple tools. Its history is old and it is said that its origin was when Yoshinobu Satake, the first lord of Akita clan, ordered the processing of silver from the Ani silver mine. Besides accessories like brooches, delicately decorated works of framed paintings and jewelry are well known both inside and outside Japan. |

Akita Hachijo, hand-woven fabric
'Akita-hachijo' are traditional textiles dyed with local plants such as 'hamanasu' (sweetbriers) and 'kariyasu' growing around Akita City. The more the textiles are washed, the deeper the color becomes. They have been made by hand in the same way for two hundred years.
